Under Cabinet Lighting Is a Game Changer

Want to give your kitchen a quick glow up? Install an inexpensive under cabinet lighting kit.

For under $50 and an afternoon, I was able to transform the look of our kitchen making it brighter and more inviting.

After our dishwasher broke and we were hand washing dishes for over a month in the middle of winter, I was dismayed at how dark the corner with my sink was. I decided to install under cabinet lighting, but I didn’t want to have to have John have to do any electrical work.

I found an accent light kit on Amazon that I thought would work. It comes with six puck lights and cords to link them together and has an electric pack with an on/off a switch. It also comes with a remote control which we don’t really use.

Installing metal channel under microwave for under cabinet lighting.
Add a metal channel above the stove to hid and protect the lighting cord.

The light pucks can be screwed in or come with an adhesive. I just used the adhesive. For the smaller cabinets, I centered the lights. The corner cabinet and wider cabinet needed two lights to create even light. Since the corner cabinet is not as long and a little higher, I positioned the pucks closer to the end of the cabinet so that they are hidden. Then daisy chain together to the electric pack.

Small, clear 3M Command Hooks are used to keep the cords under the cabinets hidden. I initially used a plastic channel to hide the cord along the walls, which works fine under the cabinets, but when we used the oven for an extended period of time, it stopped sticking and sagged from the heat.

John upgraded to a metal channel. He cut the channel to length and drilled into the tile backspace, so now the electric cord is protected.

I love the change – especially when washing dishes!
